A little while back, I realised that me and my husband had developed a pronounced tendency to be a little bit ‘holier than thou’. Let’s be clear that it was probably always there, but when you make teshuva and start talking to God and get a really long skirt, Holier Than Thou-itis kind of comes with the territory.
Thankfully, God wasn’t going to let me continue doing it for ever, so He made us move to Jerusalem where the Holier Than Thou tendency is off the scale.
I started saying things to myself like: “I don’t mind living in a dumpster, as long as my husband learns Torah…”
“I don’t mind having no friends and being a complete social outcast, as long as I’m doing God’s will…”
You can get away with that sort of rubbish when you have a steady income, a roof over your head and friends and family who are willing to put up with your mild mental illness.
But when you don’t? When God calls your bluff, to see if you really mean all that stuff you’re spouting or you’re just trying to earn brownie points by coming across as ‘Miss Tzadeket 2015’?
That’s when the façade cracks, and you suddenly realise how much BS you’ve been spouting for years.
When all that started to happen to me, God sent me a very fast way to start checking my statements out, to see if they were true, or BS Holier Than Thou. If you click HERE, you can hear it for yourself.
Now, whenever I say something that sounds a little bit too good to be true – or someone else starts saying stuff that sounds soooooo pious, or suffering martyr-ish that my eyeballs automatically start rolling back in my head – I check it against this noise.
If it goes together, I know I’ve just stumbled on a fresh delivery of BS Holier Than Thou, and I need to take appropriate evasive action. If that noise doesn’t ‘fit’ the statement that’s being made – it’s probably OK.
This Holier Than Thou detector has completely revolutionised my life! Now, whenever me or my husband comes out with a dumb statement that reeks of pretend pious, we just put it to the test, and it always comes up trumps.
Try it for yourselves, and let me have your feedback. I’d love to know what Holier Than Thou-ness it’s helping you track down and eliminate.
